| 16 | François du Toit (Progenitor of the Du Toits in South Africa)ccedil;ois du Toit, originally from Lille (Ryssel), Flanders, France, arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1686 aboard the ship Vrijheit, together with his brother Guillaume. They were among the earliest Huguenot refugees to settle at the Cape, fleeing religious persecution in France. A brother Bruno and a sister are also mentioned, but they never reached South Africa. Their parents were Pierre Du Toit and Marie Rousselle. the farm De Kleine Bos in Dal Josafat, which became his primary residence. Later, he acquired additional farms, including Zoetendal (Wagenmakersvallei) in 1712, Limiet Rivier (adjoining Zoetendal) in 1715, as well as Schoongezicht and Palmietvallei. He planted numerous oak trees, some of which survived a century later. François cultivated mixed farming: grain, vineyards, and livestock, and became one of the Cape Colony’s most prosperous farmers.74">12 February 1690, he married Susanna Seugnet, a Huguenot immigrant from Saintes, France, who had arrived at the Cape in 1689 with her sisters Claudine and Jeanne. François and Susanna had nine children, including Andries, Susanna, Geertruyda, Helena, Pierre, François, Martha, Stephanus, Elizabeth, and Maria. The sequence of children recorded in earlier genealogies was later corrected by Juna Malherbe. prominent role in local governance and community life. He served as heemraad (councilor) of Stellenbosch and Drakenstein, and was an elder in the local Dutch Reformed Church. Like his brother Guillaume, he opposed Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel in the early 1700s, particularly during the controversies surrounding Adam Tas’s complaint against the governor. François and Guillaume were summoned to court for their refusal to sign in support of the governor but instead fled with other citizens to the Vier-en-Twintig Riviere, where they were sentenced in absentia to exile in Mauritius.a-start="2432" data-end="2449">Du Toitskloof in the Drakenstein Mountains is named in his honor. Family tradition recounts that François initially requested to purchase the valley of Dal Josafat from the governor, who warned him of the dangers posed by San and Khoikhoi communities in the area. François persisted and was granted the land, with the admonition: “You must defend yourself; I cannot guarantee your safety.” lasting legacy as one of the Cape’s most successful Huguenot settlers. His brother Guillaume and his wife Sara Cochet had only one daughter, meaning François’s line became the main progenitor of the Du Toits in South Africa. | Du Toit, Francois (I500430)

| 17 | Daniel Petrus du Toit was born on 4 April 1734 in Stellenbosch, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. He died in 1809 in Tulbagh, Cape of Good Hope, at the age of 75. Toit, whose family was of French origin. Lichtenstein notes that the Du Toit family had become numerous across the region, with very few families in the neighbourhood not related to them. At the time of his visit, Daniel was seventy-one years old, still healthy and active, and married for the third time to a woman of about thirty, who had borne him several children, the youngest being only three years old. His eldest son was already a grandfather, and the total number of his descendants, including children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, was eighty-three.a-end="967">Records indicate that Daniel Petrus du Toit was married twice, though the exact number of his marriages may have been misunderstood by Lichtenstein. His youngest child, Petronella Susanna, would have been four years old in 1804. His eldest son, Petrus Stephanus (born 1758), does not appear to have been a grandfather at that time, although Daniel’s eldest daughter, Anna (born 1757), was a grandmother by 1804. Daniel fathered a total of eighteen children. | Du Toit, Daniel (I500426)

| 18 | Stephan Du Toit was born in 1602 in Lille and died there in 1680. Beyond the basic records of his birth, marriage, and death, very little is known about his life. What is known is that he married Marie Marguerite Salembier, who was born in Lille in 1604 and died there in 1689. Together they had four children: Jean-Baptiste, Marie-Catharina, Louis, and Pierre. Devolution (1667–1668) brought Lille under the control of the armies of Louis XIV. By this time—if not earlier—the Du Toit family had likely converted from Catholicism to Protestantism. Du Toit, the family, like many others, appears to have begun leaving Flanders in search of greater religious freedom, settling in cities of the Dutch Republic. | Du Toit, Stephanus (I500448)
|
| 19 | Pierre Du Toit, born 28 October 1630 in La Madeleine, Lille. The date and place of his death are unknown, though it was likely in Leyden, Dutch Republic. 70, either in Lille or Leyden). Together, Pierre and Marie had five children: Guillaume, Marie Anne, Marie Suzanne, Bruno, and Francois Du Toit.ng data-start="561" data-end="573">Francois was baptized either at La Madeleine Church in Lille on 15 September 1664, or possibly at the nearby parish Church of Saint Maurice on 5 April 1665. The most probable candidate for our Du Toit ancestor is the Francois baptized at La Madeleine, as his godparents were recorded as Jean Brian and Catherine Rousselle, who may have been a sister or close relative of Marie Du Toit (née Rousselle).er Marie’s death. One possibility is that the family were refugees from the siege of Lille in the summer of 1667. Alternatively, they may have remained in the city during the siege and left sometime after Lille was ceded to France by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1668.ally settled in Leyden (Leiden). The city had a significant and prosperous Protestant community, which included Du Toits who had been established there since at least 1605. It remains uncertain whether these Du Toits were directly related to Pierre.h mentions a Guillaume Du Toit, his wife, and a daughter Marguerite. While this Guillaume may have been Pierre’s son, it seems unlikely, as he would probably have been born around 1655, making him only about 23 at the time—young to be married with a child.Prof. Pieter Coertzen (The Huguenots of 1688–1988, Tafelberg, 1988), the Guillaume Du Toit who joined the Walloon Congregation at Middelburg Reformed Church on 20 December 1684 was probably Pierre’s eldest son and Francois’ older brother. This same Guillaume later received a farm in Stellenbosch at the Cape. | Du Toit, Pierre (I500441)

| 20 | Susanna Celliers, born on 6 October 1737, was the daughter of Jan Celliers and Anna Marais. She married Daniel Pietersz du Toit. She died on 22 December 1782. p data-start="449" data-end="1327">An inventory of the estate of her father, Jan Selliers, prepared at the Orphan Chamber in Cape Town on 15 April 1756, lists the children of Jan Selliers and Anna Marais, including Susanna Selliers, married to the farmer Daniel du Toit. The inventory names her siblings as Jan Selliers, who was of age; Hester Selliers, aged 22; Elisabeth Selliers, aged 20; Josua Carel Selliers, aged 15; and Maria Selliers, aged 12. The estate included several properties: a farmstead called den Kijkuijt in the Dal van Josaphat under the district of Drakenstein; a farmstead called de Dreijvers Valleij in the same district; and a house called de Brackefonteijn, located over the mountain near the Rivier Sonder End. The inventory was signed by the commissioners of the Orphan Chamber, D. Heijning and P. J. Dewit, with Anna Marais placing her mark. The secretary present was J.N. v. Dessin.n, including Anna du Toit; Petrus Stephanus du Toit; Johannes Francois du Toit; Daniel du Toit; Gabriel du Toit; Susanna Elizabeth du Toit; Francois du Toit; Elisabeth Johanna du Toit; Andries du Toit; Hester Maria du Toit; Carel du Toit; Maria Magdalena du Toit; and Stephanus du Toit. Susanna was the sister of Jan Celliers, Elisabeth Cilliers, Hester Celliers, Elisabeth Celliers, Josua Carel Celliers, Daniel Celliers, and Maria Celliers, and the half-sister of Gabriël Rossouw, Anna Rossouw, and Pieter Rossouw, through Judith Susanna Hendrika Marais. | Celliers, Susanna (I500427)

| 40 | ans Forster, was born around 1695 in Bern, Switzerland. In later work contracts, Jan consistently stated that Bern was his place of origin. Like many young European men of his time, he left his homeland to seek work and opportunity overseas.r before, left Texel in Holland. On board were 92 sailors and 31 soldiers. Jan was one of the sailors. The ship was commanded by Skipper Thieleman Sterling and sailed via the Cape of Good Hope on its way to Batavia.ers died, and others left the ship at the Cape. Jan remained behind when the ship departed again on 7 August 1717, continuing its journey to Batavia., Jan began to establish himself on land. On 16 July 1717, recorded as “Hans Vorster of Bern”, he signed a one-year contract with Cornelis Leendert Hutspot, a master mason. Jan agreed to work as a mason’s assistant for a monthly wage of 12 Caroli guilders and 20 pfennigs. This contract marks the beginning of his career as a mason at the Cape. This contract was renewed on 6 June 1719 and completed on 22 June 1719, when Jan confirmed before Governor Swellengrebel that his work had been completed.ring this period, Jan played an important role in the construction of the original Paarl church, which had a thatched roof. The foundation stone was laid on 6 September 1718, and by 7 April 1720 the building was far enough along that it was decided to begin using the church on 2 June 1720. The church measured 80 feet by 40 feet. In September 1720, after the northern gable of the church collapsed, Jan was paid 100 riksdalers for repair work.rded as Johannes Foster entered into another one-year contract, this time with Heemraad Schalk Willemz van der Merwe, earning 12 guilders per month. This contract was renewed annually on 3 June 1721, 29 May 1722, and 24 May 1723, showing that Jan was a reliable and respected craftsman.onfident enough in his trade to apply for burgher (citizenship) status. In his application, he stated that he was a mason by profession and believed he could earn an honest living as a free citizen of the colony. His request was granted.Barend Lübbe. These included household goods, wheat, butter, and two oxen, indicating that Jan and his wife Elisabeth Lübbe were well established.ions. These purchases paint a picture of a settled family life.trong>. They also appear in the 1725 Opgaaf (tax) roll, which records that they owned one male slave, a firearm (snaphaan), and a sword. disappear from all official records at the Cape, Stellenbosch, and Drakenstein. No estate records (MOOC) exist for Jan, which is unusual given that he had minor children.strong>Jan died or disappeared between 1728 and 1730. This assumption is based on a baptism record dated 1 April 1731, when Elisabeth Lübbe baptised a daughter, Elisabeth Bruins, in Tulbagh. The baptism entry lists the father as “unknown”. Elisabeth never remarried, which was uncommon for a young widow with small children.a Swiss-born sailor who became a respected mason, a free burgher of the Cape, and one of the early builders of the colony. | Vorster, Jan (I500053)
