• Notes

Stephan Du Toit was born in 1602 in Lille and died there in 1680. Beyond the basic records of his birth, marriage, and death, very little is known about his life. What is known is that he married Marie Marguerite Salembier, who was born in Lille in 1604 and died there in 1689. Together they had four children: Jean-Baptiste, Marie-Catharina, Louis, and Pierre. Devolution (1667–1668) brought Lille under the control of the armies of Louis XIV. By this time—if not earlier—the Du Toit family had likely converted from Catholicism to Protestantism. Du Toit, the family, like many others, appears to have begun leaving Flanders in search of greater religious freedom, settling in cities of the Dutch Republic.
