Pierre Du Toit, born 28 October 1630 in La Madeleine, Lille. The date and place of his death are unknown, though it was likely in Leyden, Dutch Republic. 70, either in Lille or Leyden). Together, Pierre and Marie had five children: Guillaume, Marie Anne, Marie Suzanne, Bruno, and Francois Du Toit. ng data-start="561" data-end="573">Francois was baptized either at La Madeleine Church in Lille on 15 September 1664, or possibly at the nearby parish Church of Saint Maurice on 5 April 1665. The most probable candidate for our Du Toit ancestor is the Francois baptized at La Madeleine, as his godparents were recorded as Jean Brian and Catherine Rousselle, who may have been a sister or close relative of Marie Du Toit (née Rousselle). er Marie’s death. One possibility is that the family were refugees from the siege of Lille in the summer of 1667. Alternatively, they may have remained in the city during the siege and left sometime after Lille was ceded to France by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1668. ally settled in Leyden (Leiden). The city had a significant and prosperous Protestant community, which included Du Toits who had been established there since at least 1605. It remains uncertain whether these Du Toits were directly related to Pierre. h mentions a Guillaume Du Toit, his wife, and a daughter Marguerite. While this Guillaume may have been Pierre’s son, it seems unlikely, as he would probably have been born around 1655, making him only about 23 at the time—young to be married with a child. Prof. Pieter Coertzen (The Huguenots of 1688–1988, Tafelberg, 1988), the Guillaume Du Toit who joined the Walloon Congregation at Middelburg Reformed Church on 20 December 1684 was probably Pierre’s eldest son and Francois’ older brother. This same Guillaume later received a farm in Stellenbosch at the Cape.
